MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 29 July 2025
Twizel’s Meridian Hard Labour Weekend Turns 40 in 2025
The Meridian Twizel Hard Labour Weekend returns over Labour Weekend, 25–26 October 2025, marking four decades of community spirit, outdoor adventure, and athletic challenge in the heart of the Mackenzie Basin.
Held annually in Twizel since 1985, the Hard Labour Weekend has grown from a half marathon into a must-do event on the multisport calendar, attracting participants from across the country (especially Canterbury and Otago) with its unique mix of trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, and family-friendly events.
What sets this event apart is the access it offers to scenery and terrain not usually open to the public. Participants run alongside hydro canals with views of the Southern Alps, bike across private high-country farmland, and kayak Lake Ruataniwha and Meridian Energy’s hydro canals. The Meridian Hard Labour Weekend is the only time each year when kayaking on the canals is permitted, making it a truly rare experience.
“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 40 years of this event, which not only showcases the stunning landscapes of our region but also brings our community together,” says Dean Nelson, Chair of the organising committee. “It’s volunteer-run and has a real local heart, with proceeds supporting community sport, wellbeing initiatives and local projects in Twizel.”
The event caters to all ages and abilities, offering:
• The Pyramid Run – 10km or off-road Half Marathon
• The Dusky Trail Mountain Bike Ride – 16km or 40km
• The Canal Kayak – 20km paddle through crystal-clear canals
• The Hard Labourer – complete the Half Marathon Run, the 40km bike ride, and the 20km kayak course.
• Plus, fun events for kids, encouraging the next generation of adventurers
Following last year’s unfortunate last-minute cancellation due to unseasonably late, heavy snow, and with this year marking four decades of the event, the volunteer committee is more motivated than ever to make 2025 the best Hard Labour Weekend yet.
The committee extends thanks to its long-standing sponsors, including Meridian Energy, Mt Cook Alpine Salmon, Four Square Mackenzie, and Lakestone Lodge, whose support continues to make the event possible.
With a welcoming community vibe, stunning scenery, and a challenging but achievable course, organisers are expecting record numbers in this milestone year.
“Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or simply looking to try something new, this is the year to give Hard Labour a go,” says Nelson. “We’re ready to celebrate, and we’d love for you to be part of it.”
